Most side effects are more common when a person first starts a prescription or adjusts the dosage. Nausea, vomiting, constipation, and even diarrhea are some of the most common complaints. In most cases, shifting to smaller, more frequent meals, drinking plenty of water, eating enough fiber, and avoiding greasy or high-fat foods can help control side effects.

Why diet matters

Beyond healthier dietary choices for long-term habits, eating better is critical for GLP-1s. Studies show that usually within 18 months of stopping GLP-1s, individuals not only risk regaining, but potentially experiencing worse cardiovascular health outcomes like higher cholesterol and blood pressure. By having a solid meal plan in place and a regular exercise routine, people can potentially combat rebound weight gain.

A smart trifecta

Every person’s weight loss journey will be different. For individuals with a BMI of 27 or higher, along with contributing weight-related conditions, or people with a BMI of 30 or higher who are diagnosed as obese, a GLP-1 might be a solution to help with losing weight. However, the medication shouldn’t be viewed as a quick fix. Instead, focus on building a holistic weight loss program that combines diet, exercise and medication.
